First Mile Project Information

What was the First Mile Project?

The "First Mile" project begun in 2007 was the first major construction project on the Goffstown Rail Trail. The work included correcting erosion problems, making safety improvements, and installing a durable processed gravel trail surface along nearly a mile of the trail. The project was primarily funded by the first grant received for building the trail, from the New Hampshire Recreational Trails Program. Additional funding and support came from donations, volunteer labor, and other in-kind contributions.

What's Happening on the First Mile Project?

Approval has been received for a NH Recreational Trails Program grant. See the press release for further information.
A survey of the entire trail corridor boundaries, including the First Mile segment, has been completed.
A trail work day was held on Saturday, August 25th for the purpose of clearing brush along the route of the First Mile project. See some photos.
Another trail work day was held on Saturday, September 22nd to continue clearing brush along the route of the First Mile project.
A crew from John Brown & Sons of Weare, donated their time and equipment to chip the large quantity of brush remaining from the earlier First Mile clearing project.
Another trail work day was held on Saturday, October 20th to finish clearing brush along the route of the First Mile project. With this finished, the First Mile segment is ready for construction to begin in the spring.
Due to additional drainage issues, the scope of this project is being broken into phases, so that the first phase can be constructed within the grant money available. Construction of the first phase has been delayed until fall 2008.
